![]() ![]() This is the first free game in a long while where not only do I feel bad FOR spending money, I feel like it was completely unnecessary. ![]() When I think freemium, I think of a game that punishes you for not spending money. The game actually gives you the highest tier characters in some of its log-in rewards, not to mention if you run the gachapon machine long enough without getting a rare card, it will just gift you one. If your biggest setback is your bad luck in RNG games, you don’t even have to worry. I may only be two weeks deep, but I’m constantly coming back and playing, and never feel restricted by the gachapon mechanic since I’m consistently earning gems to get new character again and again. On top of it all, it has a deeply rewarding achievement system that wishes to give you gifts along the way. So you can play it casually or you can play it hardcore and it really can be tailored to either style of player. While I can’t say its odd gameplay will appeal to everyone, it has a simple mechanical layout, with a much deeper stat system beneath. Honestly, as freemium games come, this game is up there if not better than most games of it’s kind. Oh did I forget to mention it also has it’s own kick-a** anime opening!? Overall it adds to the sense that as long as you progress in the game and log in every day, the game will definitely reward you. On top of it all, you get gems from completing story mode matches and again for beating them efficiently. On top of that there is a massive achievement checklist which also rewards you with gems, characters and money when you hit certain milestones. Every day there are quests you can do to get every type of currency in the game from gold you spend on leveling up to gems which you use to activate the gachapon machine for characters. Since that point, my account has just been overflowing with every currency imaginable, the game is just extremely generous. The rest were a myriad of mediocre and trash cards I ended up selling. Spent the gems immediately for an eleven character draw, pulling two super rare cards I still use in my team today. I bought the starter pack on my fourth day, thinking the game was fun enough that I would be happy to give myself a nice solid base of money, characters, gems, etc. Well I wouldn’t say I regret buying it (since its so much of a better deal than anything else offered), I honestly did not need it. Full disclosure I’ve played for two weeks now, and have spent $10 on the game getting a starter-booster pack. The Free-to-play aspect however is what I’m most impressed about. This is a little taste of the team building aspect (with assistance from my own team) Games go by in a very rhythmic pace, but I would say its two parts battle game to one part soccer game. If it sounds weird, it is, but oddly enough its actually pretty fun once you get the hang of it. What this does is create a soccer “battle” where you try to break through your opponents health with dribbling and passing, ultimately shooting on goal in an attempt to eliminate the goalie(‘s health) and score. To put it in simple terms, each character has a plethora of stats from health to dribble, and each stat contributes to higher/lower chances of getting dribbled passed, stealing, counterattacks, etc. You have three basic buttons, Shoot, Pass and Penetrate/Steal, the first two are fairly obvious, the third is where the game becomes significantly more complex. As a someone who played soccer growing up, its weird to think about soccer as anything BUT constant action and movement. The difference comes from the gameplay in Soccer Spirits, where you play a turn-based tactical-RPG style soccer game. In turn you put these characters in your teams, fight other teams (both PvP and PvE) in an attempt to gather more gems, money or evolution materials (there are a LOT). The basics of collecting evolve around a gachapon system, in which you spend in game gems to receive completely random characters of varying element, rarity and usefulness. The main idea is very similar to many other games like Puzzles and Dragons, Brave Frontier, and etc. Soccer Spirits as the name entails, is a character based soccer game where you act as the owner of a soccer team, collecting and evolving character cards to become stronger both on (or off) the field. ![]() Knocking people out with soccer balls hasn’t been this fun since middle school recess A little mash-up of review as well as if the game is actually able to be played without paying a cent. Hey guys wanted to do a little experimental article with this one, exploring different free-to-play/freemium genres. Today I look at the odd yet addicting free-to-play soccer game Soccer Spirits.
